In the wake of the Derecho storm that swept through last week, many Iowans are struggling to find relief. For many, downed trees, damaged powerlines, and scattered debris hinder recovery efforts. For others, power has been out for over a week, and non-perishable food items, coolers, and bags of ice are scarce.
If you are needing assistance, there are resources available:
DHS has numerous relief services including Food Assistance Replacement, Behavioral Health, and Disaster Case Management.
The organizations have teamed up to provide grants of $1000 to help with mortgage and rent payments for displaced Iowans.
This Facebook Group is a forum that provides individuals with information and updates on available assistance, opportunities, and resources in the area.
If you are interested in donating items, services, or money to help out, there are many relief organizations needing assistance:
They are asking for donations and at volunteers at eleven sites in the area. Volunteers are needed to distribute lunch and dinner daily through Saturday, the 22nd of August.
The organization is asking for volunteers with trucks to take donated items between distribution sites and neighborhood resource centers. Volunteers are needed daily to take 6-hour shifts through Sunday, the 23rd of August.

Hiawatha is asking for volunteers to monitor the Cooling and Charging Stations that are available at the Hiawatha Community Center.
The county is looking for volunteers to assist with the continued clean up of storm debris throughout the area.
The Red Cross has organized efforts to shelter and feed Iowans throughout the storm-affected areas. If you are a registered volunteer with the organization, you can sign up to help.
