Hosting Thanksgiving dinner can be fun and exciting. Unfortunately, it can also be stressful. It is easy to get overwhelmed during any holiday you are hosting. The key to success? Have a plan and get as many preparations done before as you can. We came up with a few tips and tricks to get you through hosting a Thanksgiving meal. 1. Make your menu & shopping list Everyone loves traditional dishes – turkey, mashed potatoes, green bean casseroles, pumpkin pie etc. However, we think it is a fun idea to add something new to the rotation each year. Try an entirely new side dish. Search the internet or Pinterest to find something different to serve. Now it is time to sit down and write your shopping list. Do not try to make a list in your memory – one of the worst things to do on Thanksgiving Day is have to run back to the grocery store for one item. We recommend writing a detailed list of every ingredient you will need. Make sure you check your pantry before you go to the store to eliminate duplicate items. 2. Plan seating By now you know who is coming to dinner, so the first order of business is to know exactly where everyone will sit. Generally, not every guest will fit at one table. Don't try to squeeze everyone in; you want your guests to be comfortable. Get out a card table or two for children or young adults. Come up with a color scheme, a centerpiece idea, place card ideas, and table settings for your tables. The plan may change once you get to the store and see what they have, but it is good to have a rough idea in mind. 3. Delegate Most guests want to contribute to the meal. Don't be afraid to ask them to bring something. Maybe there is something you don't have time to make or requires a different oven temperature. These are great things to have someone else bring. If you want to do most of the cooking ask guests to bring side items. By having guests bring whipped cream, a veggie tray or even a bottle of wine you will have less to worry about. 4. Prepare food ahead of time Whatever you can prepare before Thanksgiving Day, do it. Carefully look at your menu and decide what can be made or prepped the night before. You might be surprised just how much you can get done before the big day. 5. Set the table the night before We think this is an absolute must. It takes most people longer than they expect to set the table. Iron tablecloths and napkins and make sure dishes are clean. You may have to fiddle with the decorations a bit before they are to your liking. By setting the table the night before you will have one less thing to worry about the next day. 6. Be thankful Ruhl-Generations2Don't get so caught up in all of the preparations that you forget why you're doing it. Thanksgiving Day is a time to be with family and friends and to show our gratitude for the multitude of blessings we have. In order for Thanksgiving to be truly stress-free, you have to be grateful - even if you burn your casserole or the gluten-free rolls don't turn out. Once dinner is on the table, sit back and really enjoy your company and the food. Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Ruhl&Ruhl Realtors!
