If you have driven by Blue Grass, Iowa recently you may have noticed some "giant cubes" sticking out of the ground. This construction at 774 W. Mayne Street confounded residents as to what could be happening in their small farming community. To their delight, it was something that the Quad Cities has not had in over 25 years – a drive-in movie theater. The Blue Grass Drive-In opened earlier this month. The $750,000 project was started by Moline resident Randy Lorenz and his family. Lorenz wanted to build something that he could enjoy with his family and friends. This project has been going on since 2008 - everything from zoning problems to the excessive rain halted building of the theater. But now that dream is a reality. There are currently two 48-foot long, 27-foot high screens that have digital projected movies shown. By using digital picture, the newest movies will be offered at the drive-in. This will help them compete with traditional movie theaters. There are currently 189 vehicle spaces at each screen. Movie goers will use their FM radio to tune into their movie. Everyone will get to enjoy a double feature. The theater plans to install two more screens next summer. To see what movies are currently showing at the Blue Grass Drive-In, click here.
