Winthrop, Iowa was founded in 1857 when surveyor Alonzo P. Foster purchased prairie land in Buchanan County and laid out the original town plat along an early State Road. The town was named Winthrop after a community in Maine suggested by Foster’s colleague E. S. Norris. Growth accelerated when the Dubuque & Pacific Railroad arrived in 1859, turning Winthrop into an important grain shipping point and regional trade center.

Despite early hardships such as severe winter storms and a tornado in the 1860s, the town continued to develop with new businesses, churches, schools, and transportation connections. By the late 1800s, Winthrop had become a thriving agricultural hub with merchants, grain elevators, hotels, and local industries supporting the surrounding farming community. The town officially incorporated in 1886, establishing its local government and civic services.

Over time, Winthrop expanded its infrastructure with a municipal water system, volunteer fire department, schools, and public parks. The community continued to modernize throughout the 20th century while maintaining its small town character. Today, Winthrop remains a proud rural community known for its strong local traditions, historic roots, and the friendly spirit captured in its long standing motto, “The Friendliest Town for Miles Around.”
