The North Liberty area was first settled in 1838 by John Gaylor and Alonzo C. Dennison. Due to its location near a bend in the Iowa River, the community was originally known as “Big Bottom” or “North Bend” before officially adopting the name North Liberty in 1857. The city incorporated in 1913, when its population was just 190 residents.
As the community grew, key developments followed, including the opening of the first elementary school by the Iowa City Community School District in 1961. Continued population growth throughout the late 20th century led to the establishment of local police and fire departments, along with the construction of a community center featuring a public library and aquatic park, helping shape North Liberty into the thriving community it is today.
