Fort Madison History

Fort Madison is named after the first U.S. military outpost established in the upper Mississippi River region. The Historic Old Fort Madison operated as an active military post from 1808 to 1813, serving as both a defensive position and a trading site between the U.S. Army and Native American tribes. The fort was the location of Chief Black Hawk’s first battle against U.S. troops and is recognized as the only true War of 1812 battlefield in Iowa. Fort Madison was one of three military posts created by the U.S. Army to help maintain control over the newly acquired Louisiana Territory.

In addition to its early military history, Fort Madison is home to the Iowa State Penitentiary, which includes both the oldest and newest prison facilities west of the Mississippi River. The city also earned national recognition as “Pen City,” as it was the longtime home of the Sheaffer Pen Company, where Walter A. Sheaffer’s innovative fountain pens were manufactured from 1913 until 2007.

Attractions and Entertainment

Whether you’re shopping in the historic downtown district, attending the famous Tri-State Rodeo, celebrating at Iowa’s oldest Mexican Fiesta, enjoying Art in Central Park, or watching the Annual Parade of Lights during the holiday season, Fort Madison offers year-round hometown fun for residents and visitors alike.

Be sure to save room for dessert at Hall’s Ice Cream, where you can enjoy classic treats, daily flavors, or build your own signature Cyclone.

Marinas: Fort Madison offers two public boat access and launch locations, providing convenient entry to the Mississippi River for both residents and visitors. Willow Patch Boat Launch features four launch ramps with direct access to the Mississippi River. Fort Madison Marina is a full-service facility designed for both local and transient boaters. The marina includes high-quality amenities such as a restaurant and bar, as well as a hospitality center, making it a popular destination for river recreation and relaxation.

The museum also serves as the headquarters of the North Lee County Historical Society, preserving Fort Madison’s rich local history.
