At the time of its National Register nomination, the Bohemian Commercial Historic District, also known as New Bohemia, included 75 resources made up of 48 contributing buildings and 27 non-contributing structures. Bohemian immigrants began settling in Cedar Rapids during the 1850s, with growth accelerating after the Civil War and again following political unrest in Europe during the late 19th century. Over time, they became the city’s largest ethnic group and established a distinct neighborhood along the Cedar River between downtown and the former T.M. Sinclair and Company meatpacking plant.
Most buildings in the district were constructed between the 1880s and 1930s and feature narrow-front commercial storefronts and prominent corner blocks typical of the era. The area historically housed a wide range of businesses, including banks, a movie theater, filling stations, fraternal halls, a fire station, and industrial facilities tied to the nearby railroad corridor. Architecturally, the district reflects a mix of commercial styles and vernacular designs common during its development. Notable landmarks such as the Lesinger Block (1883) and C.S.P.S. Hall (1891) are individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
