Keota History
Keota, Iowa was established in 1873. Local legend says Reverend D.V. Smock originally suggested the name “Keoton” for the new town, combining the first and last letters of Keokuk and Washington Counties. The name was later simplified to Keota to make pronunciation easier, and it has remained the community’s name ever since.
