Anamosa History
Founded on the site of the Buffalo Forks settlement in 1838, the town that would eventually become Anamosa was originally called Lexington. When the town was incorporated in 1877, the town was re-named Anamosa in an effort to differentiate it from the other towns called Lexington.
Attractions & Entertainment
Anamosa became home to the Anamosa State Penitentiary in 1872, and the castle-like structure inspired the nickname of The White Palace of the West. The grounds also currently house the Anamosa State Penitentiary Museum, which chronicles the history of the prison. Anamosa was the home of American artist, Grant Wood. Visit the Grant Wood Art Gallery to learn about his life, view his works, and buy art prints! If you're looking for a scenic spot, visit the Wapsipinicon State Park.
