The city was founded in 1854 by Richard Williams, a local sawmill owner. He hoped the Rock Island Railroad would pass just north of the town. When it was built ten miles away, he didn’t give up his vision for the town and platted 40 acres by his farm to found Williamsburg, Iowa, which was later named in his honor.
He added another 40 acres to the city in 1856, which is currently the downtown area. In 1884, Williams’ prediction came true when another railroad was constructed. After this railway was built, which connected Cedar Rapids to Ottumwa, the city’s population grew to 1,000 people overnight.
