The North Liberty area was originally settled in 1838 by John Gaylor and Alonzo C. Dennison. Because of its location near the bend of the Iowa River, North Liberty was originally known as “Big Bottom” or “North Bend” before it was finally named “North Liberty” in 1857. North Liberty incorporated in 1913, while having a population of only 190 people. As the population continued to rise, the Iowa City Community School District opened the first elementary school in North Liberty in 1961. By 2000, the city had continued to grow establishing its own police/fire departments; and built a community center with a library and aquatic park.

North Liberty is located in Johnson County, just south of Cedar Rapids. The City covers an area of about 7.83 square miles.
