Rock Falls History
After the Black Hawk War ended, settlers quickly moved into the area, making it one of the last regions of Illinois to be developed. Hezekiah Brink was among the first to establish permanent roots, and many of the early settlers who followed were from Indiana. The history of Rock Falls is closely connected to nearby Sterling, which was originally two separate towns—Harrisburg and Chatham—that merged in an effort to secure the county seat.
Rock Falls was officially founded in 1867 by A.P. Smith, an entrepreneur who recognized the importance of water power for industrial growth. After acquiring water rights along the Rock River, Smith helped lay the foundation for the city’s development as a manufacturing center. His efforts attracted a variety of businesses over the years, including Charter Gas Engine Company, Lawrence Brothers Incorporated, and National Manufacturing, all of which contributed to the economic growth and industrial identity of Rock Falls.
