East Dubuque History

East Dubuque was established in 1853 and quickly developed a colorful reputation along the Mississippi River. During the early 20th century, the city became known for its lively nightlife and stories of speakeasies, gambling halls, and hidden whiskey stills. While much of the country strictly followed Prohibition, East Dubuque gained notoriety for the production and sale of illegal alcohol, thanks in part to easy access to a key ingredient—corn.

Local legends tell of wagon loads of liquor moving quietly through the hills and even baby buggies used to float bottles down the river to avoid detection. According to stories passed down through the years, a lantern signaling system was once used to communicate between townspeople and bootleggers operating in the surrounding bluffs.

The city’s Prohibition-era activity earned it the nickname “Sin City,” and tales often mention visits from famous gangsters such as Al Capone. Today, these stories remain a memorable part of East Dubuque’s colorful past. Located on the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River, Gramercy Park is one of the most picturesque spots in East Dubuque. Beautiful in every season, the park offers sweeping views of the river, surrounding bluffs, and the nearby city skyline. It’s a popular place for residents and visitors to relax, take photographs, enjoy a picnic, or simply appreciate the natural beauty of the region.

Gramercy Park is also home to an important piece of Native American history. The park contains twenty-six preserved burial mounds built by the ancient Hopewell culture. These Hopewell Indian Mounds are considered some of the best preserved in the state of Illinois and provide a glimpse into the region’s early inhabitants and their cultural traditions. Today, the site remains both a scenic overlook and a historically significant landmark within the East Dubuque community.
