Morrison History

The first settlers arrived in Morrison, Illinois in 1831, and the town was officially platted in 1855. It was named after John H. Morrison, a wealthy merchant from New York. Although the process toward incorporation began in 1857, Morrison was formally incorporated under Illinois state law in 1873, marking an important step in the city’s development.
One of the key factors in Morrison’s growth was the arrival of the Galena–Chicago Railroad. Originally, plans called for the railroad to pass through the nearby town of Unionville, with Morrison serving only as a stop along the line. However, Unionville requested a high payment for the railroad’s right-of-way through the town. As a result, the privately funded railroad company chose to reroute the line through other communities, including Morrison. Although the new route ultimately cost more than the original plan, the decision proved beneficial for Morrison, helping establish the city as a transportation hub and encouraging long-term economic growth.
Morrison also played an important role in local government history. For two decades, the town competed to become the county seat of Whiteside County. In 1857, Morrison successfully won the bid and has served as the county seat ever since, solidifying its importance as the administrative and civic center of the county.

Attractions & Entertainment

Morrison hosts a variety of community events and seasonal traditions that bring residents and visitors together throughout the year. One of the most unique events is CAPA Paint the Town, an art festival that attracts more than 6,000 attendees, exceeding the town’s population. During the event, canvases are displayed throughout the community, and visitors are invited to contribute their own artwork. The finished pieces remain on display around town throughout the year until they naturally fade and are refreshed during the next festival.
Each June, the City-Wide Garage Sale invites residents across Morrison to participate, creating a community-wide event where shoppers can explore sales throughout town. From May through September, the Farmers Market takes place every Saturday morning, offering fresh produce and locally grown goods from regional vendors.
The community also celebrates Firecracker Weekend, held around the Fourth of July, featuring a lively Demolition Derby at the local Bike Barn. The event includes bogs, drags, motocross races, and a fireworks display. The Bike Barn also hosts off-road racing events throughout the year for motorcycles, ATVs, and 4×4 trucks.
Another long-standing tradition is the Whiteside County Fair, which began in 1856 in Union Grove and eventually alternated between Sterling and Morrison. Today it remains a beloved annual event held in August, offering carnival rides, agricultural displays, competitions, and classic attractions like the popular cake and pie walk.
During the holiday season, Morrison celebrates with the “Hometown Christmas” Walk, featuring a festive lighted parade, decorated storefront windows, holiday entertainment, and visits with Santa. Additional seasonal traditions such as a Halloween parade and Easter egg hunt help make Morrison a lively and welcoming community all year long.

Community

Historic Downtown:
Morrison’s historic downtown district showcases the city’s beautiful architecture and small-town charm. Visitors and residents can enjoy a variety of locally owned shops, restaurants, and cafés while exploring streets lined with well-preserved historic buildings that reflect the community’s long heritage.

Morrison-Rockwood State Park:
Just outside the city, Morrison-Rockwood State Park offers more than 1,000 acres of outdoor recreation. The park features opportunities for camping, horseback riding, archery, hiking, and wildlife viewing. At the center of the park is Lake Carlton, a popular destination for fishing, boating, and relaxing by the water, making it a favorite spot for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Covered Bridge:
Morrison is also home to a covered bridge that resembles historic structures from the past. While it may appear antique, it is actually one of the newer covered bridges constructed in the region. Its longer design helps distinguish it from many traditional covered bridges, though most visitors simply admire its classic appearance and scenic setting.

Blue Goose Corn Maze:
Each year from August through September, visitors enjoy exploring the Blue Goose Corn Maze, a popular seasonal attraction in the Morrison area. The maze is known for its large size and fun challenge, making it a favorite fall activity for families and groups looking for an outdoor adventure.

Annan Grist Mill & Malvern Roller Mill:
Two historic mills near Morrison highlight the region’s agricultural and industrial past. The Annan Grist Mill, built in 1858, is a striking two-and-a-half-story structure constructed entirely of stone. Nearby is the Malvern Roller Mill, also known as the Appel Mill, which was built in the 19th century and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Although both mills are now privately owned and not open for tours, they remain popular landmarks for visitors who enjoy photographing and admiring these historic structures.
