Silvis History

Before its incorporation, the town was first called Pleasant Valley. After incorporation in 1906, it was named for one of the original settlers Richard Shippen Silvis whose family operated the Silvis Mining Company. He was a lead force in building up the railroad as a way to ship coal in and out of town.

Silvis Community

Silvis, Illinois is a community that focuses on safety with one of six 911 call centers in Rock Island County and a fire department that has been in operation since 1908. The town is deeply patriotic for many reasons, but a main patriotic attraction is their very own Hero Street USA. The town of Silvis also has over nine parks for its residents to enjoy.

 

Attractions and Entertainment

Silvis, Illinois Parks
The park system includes nine parks located throughout the town. These include Schadt Park, a local favorite that has recently been updated. This park features perfect tree cover, tennis courts and playground equipment for children of all ages. Others include Sisters Park, Phipps Prairie Park, Friendship Park and others that have great amenities as well.

Silvis Moonlight Parade
The only lighted parade in the Quad Cities, this parade is hosted annually in August. The event includes a run, called the “home run”, a craft show and live bands. There is a Kids Zone and every year the Zinnia Princess is crowned.

Hero Street Memorial Park and Hero Street USA
Over 100 veterans have served in the military from the 25 homes that line Hero Street in Silvis. This Monument commemorates their heroism and the town’s commitment to our country. 2nd Street, now called Hero Street, was renamed to honor the eight immigrants who gave their lives in service from World War II to present.

TPC Deere Run
Home of the annual John Deere Classic, TPC is operated by the PGA. This 18-hole championship, award-winning golf course is located by the Rock River. The course has been ranked in the top 100 nationwide and in the top 5 in Illinois.
