The first European settlers came to this location in 1828. The area belonged to the Potawatomi people at the time, and during the Black Hawk War of 1832, the settlers relocated to Fort Armstrong on Rock Island, about 12 miles downstream. After the war, the settlers returned. The Syms brothers developed a wood yard that sold firewood to the steamboats hauling lead from Galena to St. Louis. The town was platted in 1836. The name was meant to honor Lord Byron, the English poet. A number of businesses developed here, notably the production of quicklime for construction. This was produced from the local limestone. The work attracted a number of Swedish immigrants. The village was incorporated in 1877, and Port Byron real estate has been coveted ever since.
