Although it is a small town, Prophetstown has a rich history. Rumor has it that in 1800 the city petitioned the United States government to move the nation’s capital to this town because of its central location in the lower 48 states.
Prophetstown, Illinois was named after Wabokieshiek (White Cloud), a member of the Sauk Indians and an advisor to Black Hawk during the Black Hawk War. Known as a prophet, Wabokieshiek and his followers lived in what is now a state park. In 1832, the area was destroyed.
Historic homes and sites still pepper the town and remind residents of its history. One of the more famous sites is Eclipse Park, which is the location of the former Eclipse Lawn Mower Factory.
