DeWitt was known as part of the Underground Railroad for southern slaves in the 1850s. The town was named in honor of DeWitt Clinton, Governor of New York. It was incorporated in 1858. It was, at one time, the county seat of Clinton County. It has the distinction of having been the location of the first fatal airplane accident in Iowa at the 1911 DeWitt Fair.
DeWitt has a simple mission and that is to foster a progressive local economic climate by providing resources and education for members to increase their value to their customers, employees and community.
Dewitt has a state-of-the-art hospital with an attached nursing home. DeWitt’s Main Street is filled with unique retail businesses and places to eat that you won’t find anywhere else. The city sits directly north of the railroad line that runs from Clinton to Cedar Rapids and at the junction of highways US-30 and US-61.
DeWitt features several parks and entertainment venues from an aquatic center, to parks with walking and biking trails, bowling alleys, golf course, theaters, tennis courts and swimming pool along with so much more. DeWitt has six churches and a fitness center as well.
During the year there are events always going on. Some of the most popular events are the Clinton County Fair and German Festival. The most popular event happens on the Fourth of July with a community parade and night time celebrations!
