Ely History

Ely was founded on June 5th 1872, but the first settlers came in 1838 near where the town is today.  These settlers had deep roots from the Czech Republic that still carry on to this day.  On May 16th 1871 the Ely Post Office was established.  The town was then laid out in 1872 because of an outgrowth from the Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Northern Railway.  Through the pioneers’ hard work Ely has become a prosperous community and continues to grow.
