Ely was founded on June 5th 1872, but the first settlers came in 1838 near where the town is today. These settlers had deep roots from the Czech Republic that still carry on to this day. On May 16th 1871 the Ely Post Office was established. The town was then laid out in 1872 because of an outgrowth from the Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Northern Railway. Through the pioneers’ hard work Ely has become a prosperous community and continues to grow.

Dan and Debbie’s Creamery– 2 local Iowa Dairy farmers Dan and Debbie Takes opened their creamery on July 20th 2016. Ever since they’ve been expanding and providing excellent products to the community from delicious ice cream to squeaky cheese curds and even beef sticks from the Edgewood Meat Locker. You definitely need to stop by.
House Divided Brewery– This fairly new bar/brewery opened October 26th 2019 and the community loves it. The owners reside in Ely and it is open 7 days a week. It has a large front patio with plenty of seating, has 12 taps with local and house divided beer(s) and plenty of other drinks including sodas, seltzers etc. It is a prime location for bikers, since the bike trail goes right by it and provides a great spot for bikers and really anyone.
Odies Grill & Bar– Established in 2005, Odies has been a staple in Ely for years. They provide great food for lunch, dinner and deserts. Along with weekly specials. It’s a good place to go if you want a bite to eat, conveniently located near House Divided Brewery, where they allow outside food.
The Downtown Dachshund–The Downtown Dachshund is a little boutique on main street in Ely established in 2015. It has various different items from fashion items to various kinds of gifts. It’s a neat little boutique to visit and offer plenty of things to choose from.
Ely Public Library– The library is the heart of Ely. It has such wonderful staff and volunteers, with countless resources to utilize.
