Mount Pleasant History

Nicknamed the “Athens of Iowa,” Mount Pleasant is known for its history and the steady flow of legendary speakers in the mid-19th century including Frederick Douglas, Anna Elizabeth Dickinson and Sojourner Truth. Education has also played an important role in the history of Mount Pleasant. Iowa Wesleyan University, founded in 1842, is the oldest coeducational university west of the Mississippi River. Alumni include Arabella Babb Mansfield, the first woman in the US to be allowed to practice law; Dr. James Van Allen, principal investigator for the Explorer I and Explorer III ; Dr. Peggy Whitson, the first woman to command the international space station; and Dr. Thomas Poulter, chief scientist on two Antarctic expeditions.
