Mount Pleasant History

Nicknamed the “Athens of Iowa,” Mount Pleasant is known for its history and the steady flow of legendary speakers in the mid-19th century including Frederick Douglas, Anna Elizabeth Dickinson and Sojourner Truth. Education has also played an important role in the history of Mount Pleasant. Iowa Wesleyan University, founded in 1842, is the oldest coeducational university west of the Mississippi River. Alumni include Arabella Babb Mansfield, the first woman in the US to be allowed to practice law; Dr. James Van Allen, principal investigator for the Explorer I and Explorer III ; Dr. Peggy Whitson, the first woman to command the international space station; and Dr. Thomas Poulter, chief scientist on two Antarctic expeditions.

Attractions and Entertainment

Mount Pleasant is also home to the Midwest Old Thresher’s Reunion. The five-day event attracts crowds over 100,000 people annually. The Midwest Old Thresher’s Reunion dates back to the 1950s and pays tribute to the agricultural heritage in the Midwest. Live-action displays take place around steam engines, tractors, classic cars and even an electric trolley. Food and live music are also available for guests to enjoy.
