Originally know as Meeks Mills, Wisconsin Territory, Bonaparte was founded in 1837 on the banks of the Des Moines River. As a result, Bonaparte, IA was reliant first on river trade. However, the town later grew by contributing to railroad expansion across Iowa.
In 1986, citizens of Bonaparte came together to revitalize and restore the downtown and residential areas. Consequently, there has been a “resurgence of historic restoration.” The Bonaparte Historic Riverfront District was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
