Cedar Rapids

Cedar Rapids , Iowa's second largest city, is home to almost 300 manufacturing firms and two dozen Fortune 500 companies. Often referred to as the City of Five Seasons, Cedar Rapids offers many job opportunities as a major economic hub. Even with a large metropolitan area, Cedar Rapids offers the conveniences of a large city with the personality of a small community.

Cedar Rapids was originally established in 1838 as the town Columbus by William Stone. In 1841 it was renamed by N.B. Brown and his associates. They named the town Cedar Rapids for the rapids in the Cedar River at the site, which was named for the large number of red cedar trees that grew along its banks. Cedar Rapids was incorporated on January 15, 1849. The economic growth of Cedar Rapids increased in 1871 upon the founding of the Sinclair meatpacking company.
