Their business evolved into the Bettendorf Axel and Wagon Company, which subsequently became the largest railroad car shop west of the Mississippi River. In recognition of their importance, the town was incorporated as Bettendorf in 1903.
Bettendorf is now home to Alcoa, a world-wide manufacturer of lightweight metals. In 1940, Alcoa built the largest aluminum rolling mill in the world.

Bettendorf is located on the banks of the Mississippi River in Scott County just east of Davenport and directly across the river from Moline. The city covers an area of 22.4 square miles.
