Platteville began as a farming and fur trading area, but was heavily settled in the mid–1820’s by Cornish lead miners. A trapper, Emmanuelle Metcalf, had discovered mineral lead in an animal den and starting mining the ore. In 1827, two men bought Metcalf’s claim and soon after a general store was built. By 1929, the community numbered 150 and was named Platteville. Over 4,000 lead miners had moved into southwest Wisconsin by 1929. The town was designed to emulate the layout of Yorkshire, England. In 1836, the Wisconsin Territory was created and five years later Platteville was incorporated. The first long-distance telephone line in the U.S. was constructed between Platteville and Lancaster in 1877. The Wisconsin School of Mines was created in 1907 and the Platteville State Teachers College in 1925. The schools merged in 1959 and were renamed the University of Wisconsin at Platteville in 1964.
