Brief History
Iowa City was created to become the state capital by an act of the legislature in 1839. The capital was then in Burlington, on the Mississippi River, and the governor wanted the capital to be closer to the center of the territory. The site picked was on the bluffs of the Iowa River in Johnson County. It officially became the capital in 1841. The city was incorporated in 1853. In 1857, Des Moines was made the state capital, but the Old Capital Building still stands in the middle of the University of Iowa campus.
