Iowa City isn’t one of the biggest cities in Iowa but is also known as one of the most well-known cities in the state. With a population of 67,862 according to the 2010 census, which is up 9.1% from the previous census, Iowa City is home to the University of Iowa and all their Big Ten Athletic teams. Iowa City offers many different housing options from downtown living, to student housing and even new construction. Iowa City has close ties with Coralville which is a suburb of Iowa City as the two towns support each other. Forbes Magazine ranked Iowa City as the second best small city to do business for the United States.


Iowa City was created to become the state capital by an act of the legislature in 1839. The capital was then in Burlington, on the Mississippi River, and the governor wanted the capital to be closer to the center of the territory. The site picked was on the bluffs of the Iowa River in Johnson County.  It officially became the capital in 1841. The city was incorporated in 1853.  In 1857, Des Moines was made the state capital, but the Old Capital Building still stands in the middle of the University of Iowa campus.

A large majority of the city caters to the 30,000 plus students of the university and young adults.  But, when looking to raise a family Iowa City offers some of the best schools in the state for Iowa award winning education programs. There is an endless amount of community support for Hawkeyes and for those living in Iowa City thrives off not only what the city has to offer itself but also in the events that the University of Iowa also puts on.  Iowa City has become one of the economic hubs of Iowa and is a crucial part of the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City Technology Corridor. It is both a cultural and business center. The city has many unique features, including a life-sized chessboard in the pedestrian plaza with people as chessmen. The city features theatre, music, and cultural events of all kinds.

Attractions and Entertainment

The Iowa City is full of attractions and entertainment for residents of all ages. City Plaza (commonly called the Pedestrian Mall or simply Ped Mall) serves as a gathering place for students and locals, it draws large crowds for its summertime events such as the Friday Night Concert Series and the annual Iowa City Jazz Festival and Iowa City Arts Festival. The Ped Mall area contains restaurants, bars, retail, hotels, and the Iowa City Public Library. Visiting the Hancher Auditorium you will often find a nationally touring theater, dance and musical shows, and in the past 20 years the auditorium has commissioned more than 100 works of music, theater and dance. This facility was badly damaged during the Iowa flood of 2008 and plans are being made to rebuild the facility farther uphill, away from the Iowa River.   One of Iowa City’s most well-known attractions is the home of the University of Iowa's athletic teams, known as the Iowa Hawkeyes, a member of the Big Ten Conference, the football team plays at Kinnick Stadium, while men's and women's basketball, volleyball, and the wrestling teams compete at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.  The city also offers many quiet and scenic parks.
