Brief History
DeWitt was known as part of the Underground Railroad for southern slaves in the 1850s. The town was named in honor of DeWitt Clinton, Governor of New York. It was incorporated in 1858. It was, at one time, the county seat of Clinton County. It has the distinction of having been the location of the first fatal airplane accident in Iowa at the 1911 DeWitt Fair.
