Brief History
Davenport is named for George Davenport, a native of Lincolnshire, England, who settled on Rock Island (the island, not the town) in 1816. He came as subtler for Fort Armstrong, which was constructed as a frontier fort that year. As subtler Davenport sold provisions and supplies to the soldiers. He later began trading with the Indians, was appointed the first postmaster on Rock Island, and was the first to navigate a steamboat through the Rock Island Rapids. In 1835 he bought land from Antoine LeClaire, Davenport’s first resident, on the west bank of the Mississippi, adjacent to Rock Island, and helped lay out the town that bears his name.
