Historic architecture. Hands down.

Clinton was one of the largest sawmill centers in the country during the second half of the 19th century—but the history doesn’t stop there. Some of the most notable historic attractions include the George M. Curtis House (a restored Victorian mansion of one of the lumber magnates), the Clinton County Courthouse, and the Van Allen Building (built in 1914 and one of the last buildings designed by architect Louis Sullivan) which is now a museum. Head to the riverfront for breathtaking views of the Mississippi River to learn even more about the lumberjacks at the Sawmill Museum, check out the state-of-the-art marina, or hop on the Clinton Discovery Trail and take in the scenic bluffs of Eagle Point Park. Prairie Pastures Dog Park is the best place to visit with the pooch for some fun in the sun (or snow!) and Stone Tower at Eagle Point Park is a must-see.

Clinton History

The first permanent European-American settler arrived in the Clinton, Iowa area in 1835. Clinton was originally platted as the town of New York in 1836 by Joseph Bartlett but was renamed in 1857 in honor of the sixth governor of New York – DeWitt Clinton.

In 1855, Bartlett’s land was purchased by the Iowa Land Company in anticipation of construction on the Chicago, Nebraska, and Iowa Railroad line traveling across the Mississippi River. The railroad was completed in 1859 traveling all the way to Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Clinton, and the adjacent town of Lyon became a lumber industry center between 1850 and 1900, using rafts of logs floated down from Wisconsin and Minnesota. Thereafter, the manufacturing industry came to Clinton, attracted by the transportation afforded by the river and the railroad.

In 2006, Clinton received a grant from Iowa that allowed the city to expand – adding a new baseball field, tennis courts, hiking/biking trail, a fishing pier, boat ramps, playground equipment, a skateboard park, picnic areas, restrooms, marina, riverfront restaurant, RV Park, band shell and theater to Clinton. The grant also assisted with the rehab of a lighthouse which offers a 360-degree view of the Mississippi River and the historic homes along it.
