The first permanent European-American settler arrived in the area in 1835. Clinton was platted as the town of New York in 1836 by Joseph Bartlett. In 1855, Bartlett’s land was purchased by the Iowa Land Company in anticipation of construction on the Chicago, Nebraska, and Iowa Railroad line traveling across the Mississippi, the railroad was completed in 1859 traveling all the way to Cedar Rapids, IA. In 1857 the renamed the town in honor of the sixth governor of New York, DeWitt Clinton. Clinton, and the adjacent town of Lyon, became a lumber industry center between 1850 and 1900, using rafts of logs floated down from Wisconsin and Minnesota. Thereafter, manufacturing and heavy industry came to Clinton, attracted by the transportation afforded by the river and the railroad.
In 2006 Clinton received a grant from Iowa that allowed the city to continue its expansion. This grant purchased a new baseball field, tennis courts, hiking/biking trail, a fishing pier, boat ramps, playground equipment, a skateboard park, picnic areas, restrooms, marina, riverfront restaurant, RV Park, band shell, theatre, and assisted with the rehab of a lighthouse which holds 360ndegree views of the Mississippi river and the historic homes cased amongst it.
