Brief History

The first permanent European-American settler arrived in the area in 1835. Clinton was platted as the town of New York in 1836 by Joseph Bartlett. In 1855, Bartlett’s land was bought by the Iowa Land Company in anticipation of the construction of the Chicago, Nebraska, and Iowa Railroad line across the Mississippi at that point. They renamed the town Clinton in honor of Dewitt Clinton, Governor of New York. Clinton, and the adjacent town of Lyon, became a lumber industry center between 1850 and 1900, using rafts of logs floated down from Wisconsin and Minnesota.
Thereafter, manufacturing and heavy industry came to Clinton, attracted by the transportation afforded by the river and the railroad.
The Community
Clinton today is an active river community, manufacturing center, and tourist destination. The city covers an area of 35.6 square miles and has the rather low population density of 748 people/square mile. Lock and Dam 13 is located at Clinton.
