Brief History
Bettendorf has borne several names. The first was Lillienthal, after a tavern and dance hall. Another village, Gilbert, developed adjacent to Lillienthal and the two towns merged under the name Gilbert in 1858. Around 1900, the Bettendorf brothers were induced to move their ironworks from Davenport to Gilbert. Their business evolved into the Bettendorf Axel and Wagon Company, which subsequently became the largest railroad car shop west of the Mississippi River. In recognition of their importance, the town was incorporated as Bettendorf in 1903. In 1940, Alcoa built the largest aluminum rolling mill in the world adjacent to Bettendorf.
Bettendorf is located on the banks of the Mississippi River in Scott County just east of Davenport and directly across the river from Moline. The city covers an area of 22.4 square miles. It has the lowest population density (1,528 people/square mile) and the highest median household income of any of the Quad Cities.
